Charles Dickinson, 50, grew up in a family of artists. His father, Thorn, was a painter. Grandfather Sidney Dickinson’s work hangs in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and the Greenville County Museum of Art in South Carolina. Sidney’s second cousin, Edwin Dickinson, has work in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. A Connecticut native who now lives in St. Augustine, Charles Dickinson has been commissioned for paintings in such diverse locations as the Meadowlands Racetrack in New Jersey, Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Cape Cod, Mass., the New York Stock Exchange, IBM, United Technologies, Hallmark, Flagler College, the Hank Williams Museum, and the St. Joe Co. Numerous private collectors have purchased his work.

He began drawing in early childhood. He received four years of formal training at the Paier College of Art in Hamden, Conn., and two years of instruction in painting and sculpture at the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Old Lyme, Conn. He has worked as a plein air landscape painter for 30 years and often incorporates imaginative imagery into his landscapes. He has taught at North Hollow School in Rochester, Vt., and at the Johnson State College External Degree Program in Johnson, Vt.

His work has been featured in several media formats, including the opening presentation on NBC Sports for the PGA Tournament at TPC Sawgrass and a number of magazines and newspapers. He often participates in invitational plein air painting events throughout the East, and he has won several awards. He is a member of the St. Augustine Art Association, the Artists Alliance of North Florida, the Plein Air Artists of St. Augustine, Landscape Artists International, and a signature member of Plein Air Florida. He is an artist-in-residence at the Dow Museum of Historic Houses in St. Augustine. Dickinson has been painting the East Coast of the United States for many years and often divides his time between Florida, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Vermont. His artistic aim is to continue to create paintings from the landscape and his imagination that capture his vision of the spirit and beauty of nature.

Which artists do you admire? I admire and was influenced by my father, Thorn Dickinson, who painted wonderfully. My grandfather Sidney Dickinson and his second cousin, Edwin Dickinson, were also important influences and artists that I admire. Other artists whose work I admire are Vincent van Gogh, El Greco and the field studies of Frederic Lord Leighton.

What inspires you? Nature is the best inspiration.

What is your work schedule? I try to paint every single day. I try to always be productive, but plein air Paint Outs are great motivators because time is limited. For the last 30 years 98 percent of my work has been created on location, en plein air. I work throughout the East. The other 2 percent is created in a studio I have in the Artist Cottage at the Dow Museum of Historic Houses.

What are your favorite subjects and why? My favorite subjects are trains, ruins, trees, figures, boats, interesting architecture or any subject with a strong composition and interesting lighting. These are all powerful subjects.

How would you describe your work? Pure painting, where I use texture, color and brushstrokes to try to capture some of the life that surrounds all of us every day.

What is your style of painting? Realistic expressionism.

What mediums do you use? Primarily oil color but I also work in pen and ink, acrylic and watercolor.
