Like history detectives, members of the Winter Park Historical Association are trying to track down information for hundreds of old photos in the group’s archives. If you recognize anyone in the photos or if you know the locations, contact the association at wphistory.org or 407.647.2330. Dani Janesick, the association’s executive director, says they also welcome donations of old photos of former Winter Park residents.

Winter Park High School may need a larger trophy case. Last month the boys basketball team won the Class 6A state championship. A month before that, the Wildcat cheerleaders won the state championship in the Large Varsity All-Girl division. Those top squads join the reigning 2009 state champs from Winter Park High for girls’ cross country and “Sound of the Wildcats” marching band.
To earn the basketball title, Winter Park beat Dr. Phillips 76-57 in the championship game in Lakeland in early March.
The 20-girl cheerleading squad competed against 44 teams in early February. They were judged on tumbling, stunting, dancing, jumping, choreography and overall impression.

Andrew Lane, longtime conductor and first general manager of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, will resign after the completion of the current season in May. “After 17 years with the Orlando Philharmonic, I have decided to move on to other things at the end of the 2009-2010 season,” Lane said in a statement. “I will continue my conducting duties with the Sarasota Orchestra and Naples Philharmonic, and I look forward to being able to devote more of my time to the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra.”
A key player in the founding of the Philharmonic in 1993, Lane developed and conducted the orchestra's educational and community concerts. In 1996 he was named principal pops and resident conductor, and he developed the orchestra's pops series and the outdoor and special-event performances. In addition to his work in Orlando, he has been a guest conductor with The Florida Orchestra, Naples Philharmonic, Rochester Philharmonic, Asheville Symphony and San Antonio Symphony. He was named pops conductor of the Sarasota Orchestra and leads that ensemble for all their subscription pops concerts for the 2009-2010 season. He is also music director of the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra. In 2007 he resigned as resident conductor to pursue additional professional opportunities and guest engagements, but he remained as principal pops conductor.
"From initiating the founding of the organization, to pioneering our educational programs, Andy has been there. He brought class, passion and personality to the Philharmonic's pops programs. His rapport with the orchestra has been outstanding, and his connection to the audience has been invaluable,” Philharmonic Executive Director David Schillhammer said in a statement.
Lane, 49, and his family have a longtime connection to Winter Park. His wife, Barbara, graduated from Winter Park High School, as did their son, Chris, who now is music major at Florida State. Their younger son, Alex, attends Winter Park High and is a member of the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra. Barbara and Chris were as well when they were in high school.
Until a new principal pops conductor is selected, Music Director Christopher Wilkins will oversee the programming of the pops concerts.

Rollins College has received national recognition for its work in the
community through volunteerism, service-learning and civic engagement.
The Corporation for National and Community Service named the college to
the 2009 Presidents Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with
Distinction. This is the fourth consecutive year Rollins has been named
to the Honor Roll and the third time it has been recognized with
Distinction. The federal agency, which administers the annual Honor Roll
award, recognized more than 700 colleges and universities for their
impact on issues from poverty and homelessness to environmental justice.
Among the school’s community projects:
• Service-learning academic courses and community-based research
projects in partnership with more than 200 nonprofit agencies in Central
Florida and across the state.
• Science education and mentoring for Orange County public schools.
• During Pathways to College Day, local elementary school students visit
Rollins to learn about college.
“We are proud that Rollins faculty and staff have worked together to
offer these service opportunities for our students and that our students
have responded so enthusiastically,” Rollins President Lewis Duncan
said in a statement. “This recognition affirms our efforts to help
students connect what they learn in the classroom to applications in
everyday life.”

Derek Donahue, an eighth-grader at Orangewood Christian School, has earned his Eagle award, the highest rank in scouting. The 13-year-old is a member of Boy Scout Troop 205 of the First Presbyterian Church of Maitland. After discussing needs at the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey in Maitland, Derek decided to build a rock design and water feature at the center’s entrance.
Edward Wojcik, financial adviser with Merrill Lynch in Winter Park, was named among the top 1,000 advisers in the United States by the financial magazine Barron’s. The list was broken down by states, and Wojcik was the only adviser chosen from the Orlando area. To make the list, the magazine said advisers have to be leaders in assets under advisement, generate ample revenue for their firms and run high-quality practices.
